Why should you not miss this meeting?

« Berck is the world capital of kite flying. In the world of renowned kite flyers, Berck beach is the place you absolutely have to go once in your life. For the public, it is the guarantee of witnessing an unforgettable show. Coming from all over the world, the best will be there with exceptional kites. It is also a cultural meeting with delegations from the four corners of the planet. », assures Roger Tessa-Gambassi, the artistic director of the RICV who promises a magical week. And in thirty-seven editions, the RICV have always respected these specifications.

No synchronized flight demonstrations this year, but an international competition more muscular than the world championships which were held in previous editions. “ This is the World Kite Cupexplica Roger Tessa-Gambassi. Where the World Cup only offered teams of two lines of kites in synchronized flight, this year, we will have pairs of two and four lines as well as individuals. There will therefore be a more extensive program and a real show for visitors.. » Ten teams will compete: France, Germany, Spain, England, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Colombia, China and Taiwan. « For flyers, it’s the Holy Grail. Only in Berck are all the conditions met to organize a competition of this type. »

Heading for Asia

Asia will be the main theme of this edition of the RICV with four large delegations: India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and China. « Why Asia? Because it is the birthplace of kites. Cave paintings dating back 7,000 years have been foundtold by Roger Tessa-Gambassi. In these five countries represented by their delegation, kite flying is cultural, an important part of their heritage. » These delegations will be omnipresent on the beach and the esplanade, where they will have their pavilion. They will organize walks, dances and demonstrations. Highlight: a hundred meter long Chinese dragon which will overlook the beach.

New products and a world record to beat

At the end of the last edition, Roger Tessa-Gambassi found that the decoration might still be improved. This year, six large totems will be installed on the beach as well as fifteen wind turbines. « They were created by the Beauduciel company and are made of windsurfing masts and flamboyantly colored fabrics. They are going to impress! » Another new feature: a simultaneous flight of around forty giant octopuses. “ A world record that can only be beaten if weather conditions permit », specifies the artistic director.

The unavoidable

The mega structures, the heroes’ village with the stars of the biggest cartoons will, like every year, be there. This will be an opportunity to pose with flying whales or Hulk and Spiderman. Another obligatory passage with the garden of Aeolus for a little dream and lightness, workshops where children can build their own kite, multicolored turbines, human frescoes which will give rise, every day, to a photo taken from the sky and of course, on Saturday 27 evening, the famous parade of delegations followed by the final fireworks.

International kite meetings in Berck: on the beach and on the esplanade from April 20 to 27.
