[이데일리 김상윤 기자] The Nihon Keizai (Nikkei) newspaper reported on the 21st that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is visiting India, will make a surprise visit to Kiiu, Ukraine on the 21st.

Prime Minister Kishida plans to hold a summit meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and convey his intention to support Ukraine under Russian invasion. is expected to invite The Asahi Shimbun analyzed, “It appears that the Japanese prime minister himself decided that it was essential to visit Kiiwu and hold talks with President Zelensky if Japan were to appeal for solidarity with the G7 in relation to Russia’s invasion at the G7 summit.”
It is the first visit by Prime Minister Shida to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February last year. It is unusual for a Japanese prime minister to visit a disputed area where fighting continues, the Nikkei reported.
Previously, President Zelensky requested a visit to Ukraine in a phone call with Prime Minister Kishida in January. Japan was the only leader among the leaders of the seven major countries (G7) who did not visit Ukraine.
