King Albert II, Queen Paola, Prince Laurent, as well as Princess Astrid attended the Te Deum on Wednesday morning on the occasion of King’s Day, in the Cathedral of Saints-Michel-et-Gudule, in Brussels. Prince Lorenz and Princess Claire were notably absent of the day.
Around sixty people, some of whom flew the black, yellow and red flag, were present to honor the arrival of the members of the royal family, from 9:30 a.m., at the foot of the steps of the cathedral, located in the heart of the Belgian capital.
King Albert II and Queen Paola, armed with a cane, arrived from the top of the cathedral, shortly after 10:00 a.m. The Te Deum (“God, we praise you” in Latin), a sung religious celebration, began shortly after their arrival.
Several members of government were present, including Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden. The President of the Senate, Stéphanie D’Hose, as well as the President of the Chamber, Éliane Tillieux, also attended the ceremony. The entire diplomatic corps, patriotic associations and certain schools (including the private Catholic school Cours Blanche de Castille) were notably invited to the King’s Day celebrations.
King Philippe, Queen Mathilde and their four children were not present at the Te Deum, knowing that tradition requires that the King not celebrate himself.
