King Philippe went to Marche-en-Famenne on Tuesday followingnoon to meet soldiers and civilians, in this case secondary school students in training, and to learn regarding personnel policy within the Department of Defense.
The sovereign, dressed in the new variegated fatigues used in most units of the Belgian army and carrying his general ranks – with four stars –, was welcomed on his arrival at the King Albert military camp by the Minister of Defense. Defense, Ludivine Dedonder, and by the “boss” of the army, Admiral Michel Hofman, we noted on site.
He was able to learn regarding the recruitment policy of Defense, which next year will undertake the almost record commitment of more than 4,000 people in several categories, including 2,500 active military personnel and 460 civilians, a category the importance of which is expected to increase over the coming years.
As of January 1, Defense had 25,709 personnel (23,987 military personnel and 1,722 civilians). But the plans prepared by Ludivine Dedonder and approved by the government aim to increase the department’s workforce to 29,100 people by January 1, 2030. Admiral Hofman explained on Tuesday the challenges involved in this objective, in a market of tense employment.
The King spoke in particular with young people from a secondary school in Charleroi and another secondary school in Antwerp. These schools follow training dedicated to defense and security professions, provided in 29 establishments – sixteen in Flanders and thirteen in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. The sovereign also met recruits in the “Military Initiation Phase” (PIM).
This visit by the Head of State to the King Albert military camp in Marche-en-Famenne was part of his traditional working visits to Defense.
