Mohammed VI, the king of Morocco, will be present with his son in Algiers, in a few days, for the summit of the Arab League which promises to be historic.
The ad is amazing. While we were expecting whether the King of Morocco would accept the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in view of the summit of the Arab League, which will take place in Algiers on November 1 and 2, it is finally the Algerians who have indicated that the Moroccan monarch would be well on the trip. On the side of the royal palace, neither confirmation nor denial. This suggests that Mohammed VI will indeed be present in Algiers.
According to Jeune Afrique, official Algerian sources have obtained confirmation of the information from “leaders of Arab countries in the Gulf”. The newspaper assures that Mohammed VI will be accompanied by his son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, who is taking up more and more space in the royal organization chart.
The summit of the Arab League should therefore be full this year. All invited Heads of State will indeed be present. If there will be no question of angry subjects, in particular that of Western Sahara, this event will undoubtedly be an opportunity to ease tensions between Algiers and Rabat.
Exit annoying subjects
It has been 17 years since King Mohammed VI visited Algeria. It was already, at the time, to participate in an Arab League summit. Since August 2021, relations between the kingdom and its neighbor have been extremely tense, so there was no indication that Mohammed VI would agree to go to Algiers.
But Algerian diplomacy has played its part well. She has indeed sent an official invitation to the Moroccan sovereign, via his Minister of Justice. She also transmitted to the international media some rumors from the corridors which said that she wanted the king to agree to come to Algiers. Mohammed VI would have been ill-advised to refuse this gesture.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune has already warned that he wanted this summit to be “unifying”. Exit, therefore, the subjects of tension between Rabat and Algiers. In particular, it will be regarding Palestine and cooperation between Arab countries.
