King Charles invites Premier Sunak to Scotland

At the invitation of King Charles III. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his family plan to spend the weekend at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The visit to the royal estate in the Highlands follows a tradition that Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, founded.

The Queen, who has seen a total of 15 heads of government in 70 years on the throne, invited then Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Scotland with his partner Carrie and son Wilfred at the beginning of September 2021. Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022 on Balmoral, two days following meeting the new Prime Minister Liz Truss there.

For Sunak, the weekend trip is a last distraction before Parliament returns from the summer recess on Monday and everyday political life picks up speed once more. The 43-year-old has two daughters, born in 2011 and 2013, with his wife Akshata Murty, who is the same age.

The British press is curious to see whether Sunak and family will visit the Highland Games in nearby Braemar on Saturday. Charles is patron – and a big kilt fan – of the event, where participants compete in disciplines such as log throwing and stone throwing. The late Queen also attended the traditional Braemar Gathering almost every year.
