(CNN) — King Charles III was admitted to a London hospital on Friday morning to undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate, Buckingham Palace announced.
The palace added in the statement that the 75-year-old monarch had arrived at the facility for his “scheduled treatment.”
“His Majesty would like to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes over the last week and is delighted to know that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness,” he added.
Before his treatment, Charles visited Kate, Princess of Wales, at the London Clinic, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Kate is in hospital following a successful abdominal operation on January 16.
The palace revealed last week that the king was to undergo treatment and said his condition was “benign”.
Carlos arrived at The London Clinic, a private health center near Regent’s Park, accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, reported the British agency PA Media. This is the same hospital where her daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, remains hospitalized following her abdominal operation last week.
The king will postpone his commitments for a short period while he recovers following leaving the hospital.
Specific medical conditions of members of the royal family are rarely disclosed publicly. The palace believes that they are entitled to a certain level of medical privacy despite their status as public servants.
However, the king made an unusual intervention and chose to share his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked, a royal source told CNN.
And it seems their approach worked. According to data from the National Health Service in England, there has been an increase in the number of men checking if they are at risk of prostate cancer.
Visits to its “enlarged prostate” website, which offers information on causes, symptoms and treatment options, saw traffic increase more than 1,000% above its daily average following the announcement of the palace.
