King Charles III greeted by thousands as he arrives at Buckingham Palace (videos)

Upon exiting the car carrying him and Queen Consort Camilla, the 73-year-old sovereign approached the crowd behind barriers. In a dark suit, he shook hands, exchanged a few words, sent hand salutes, to cries of “God Save the King!” or sometimes the British anthem.

The royal standard, signaling the presence of the monarch in his principal residence, was then hoisted over the palace for the first time in his reign.

When the sovereign is absent, the British flag — the Union Jack — flies over the palace.

King Charles then walked through the courtyard with Camilla, his wife now queen consort, and then entered the building.

Charles is due to record his first royal address there in the Blue Drawing Room, which will be broadcast on television at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT).

An official photo will be taken during this registration.

He must also receive Prime Minister Liz Truss, before being officially proclaimed king on Saturday morning.
