LONDON — King Charles III and Queen Camilla were evicted from an open-air exhibition during a visit to the English Channel island of Jersey yesterday following a security incident that was later confirmed to be a “false alarm.”
As confirmed by a royal spokesperson in a statement carried by local media, Camilla was having an ice cream when a companion approached and whispered something in her ear, before the monarchs were escorted to the nearby Pomme d’Or hotel in St. Helier, the island’s capital.
A member of the organization raised the alarm and after stopping the visit, carrying out a complete check of the area, and saving Their Majesties, the authorities confirmed that it was a false alarm.
Eamon Fenlon, chief executive of Jersey Dairy, had just served the Queen an ice cream from a van before she was escorted out of the Expo. Fenlon said: “I had just given the Queen an ice cream and turned around to go get one before we had a chat. But when I turned around she had been taken away. Other people told me it was a drone but I don’t know if that’s official or not.”
Matt Taylor, founder of Jersey Sea Salt, was chatting with the king when his protection officer approached him and told him he had to leave immediately.
Taylor said: “He stopped at the stall and said ‘Oh, sea salt’, and I said ‘come and have a chat, sir’. Then his security guard turned up, grabbed me and said ‘you have to leave, now’. He didn’t seem scared, but he was quite serious. They just ushered him out. It’s a shame as he had stopped and chatted to us on his own accord.”
After a brief break of about 20 minutes, the monarchs were taken back outside to meet local school children before being welcomed as guests to a tea party.
A royal source said: “There was a slight problem, an investigation turned out to be a false alarm, all precautions were taken and the show resumed shortly afterwards.”— EFE/The Mirror
