(CNN) — In his first public comments since his cancer diagnosis, King Charles III expressed his gratitude to the public for their support, saying it gave him “the greatest comfort and encouragement,” according to a statement.

“I would like to wholeheartedly thank you for the numerous messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days. “As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, those kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” the statement read.

The king added that his diagnosis has strengthened his admiration for organizations that help cancer patients. “My lifelong admiration for his tireless care and dedication is even greater as a result of my own personal experience,” the statement added.

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and would step back from public duties while he undergoes treatment.

He was identified following he was admitted to a London hospital for a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate last month, the Palace said. Prostate cancer has been ruled out by CNN by a royal source, who did not provide further details.

Doctors advised him to step away from his public duties, but the palace emphasized that he would continue with his state duties and procedures.

The king was seen leaving the capital by helicopter from Buckingham Palace on Tuesday followingnoon. Shortly before, Prince Harry was seen arriving at Charles’ home in London.

Charles is expected to continue receiving his daily red boxes of government documents so he can continue working on state documents at home. CNN understands that the king is anticipated to continue his weekly audience with the prime minister and alternative arrangements will be made if his doctors advise him to minimize in-person contact.

Although all the signals from the Palace so far have been positive, the news is disconcerting. It has only been regarding 17 months since Charles acceded to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince William, Charles’s son and heir to the throne, and Queen Camilla are expected to make more public commitments to account for Charles.
