“King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s Coronation: A Detailed Guide to the Historic Ceremony”

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be crowned on Saturday at Westminster Abbey over a day to the millimeter program.

Here is how it unfolds

  • 5h (00h, Quebec time): opening to the public of the observation sites located along the route of the procession. First come, first served: early risers can enjoy the best view.
  • From 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. (1h15 to 2h30): guests begin to arrive at security checkpoints.
  • 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. (3h30 to 4h45): Arrival of heads of state, foreign heads of government, ministers, former prime ministers, members of foreign royal families and the British royal family.
  • 9h20 (4h20): the procession of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla departs from Buckingham Palace in the “Diamond Jubilee State Coach”, a carriage first used in 2014 which will be pulled by six horses. The procession will take the long avenue of the Mall to Trafalgar Square then cross Whitehall, the district of the ministries, before arriving at the abbey.
  • 10h (5h): Charles and Camilla enter the abbey through the Great West Gate. Charles will wear a robe d’Etat, a long cape embroidered in crimson velvet.

The celebration begins.

  • 11h (6h): Charles III is crowned. The Archbishop of Canterbury places on his head the Crown of St Edward, a solid gold crown set with rubies, amethysts and sapphires, and fitted with a purple velvet cap hemmed with an ermine band. To mark this moment, trumpets are sounded and shots are fired at different locations across the UK.
  • 12h (7h): end of the ceremony. The king leaves the abbey wearing the ceremonial robe of his grandfather George VI, in purple silk velvet embroidered with gold. On her head, the Imperial State Crown, set with 2868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls and four rubies.
  • The procession sets off, taking the King and Queen to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, a golden carriage used at every coronation since that of William IV in 1831. It will be pulled by eight horses due to its weight: four tons.
  • 12h33 (7h33): Charles and Camilla arrive at Buckingham Palace.
  • 12h45 (7h45): they receive the royal salute from the military in the palace gardens.
  • Around 1:15 p.m. (8:15): the king, queen and members of the royal family appear on the balcony of the Palace to watch the flypast.
