King Charles III awarded the four members of the Korean K-Pop band Blackpink one of the highest honors in the United Kingdom, in appreciation of their efforts to combat climate warming.
The King granted the four singers, Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, Lisa (Lisa) Manoban and Roseanne (Rose) Park, the rank of Officer of the Order of the British Empire, during a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace.
The singers received this honor in the presence of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife, Kim Keun-hee, who are currently on a state visit to London.
The palace explained, in a statement, that the tradition of singers comes to reward them for their role in the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP26), which was held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021.
The palace continued: “The band has encouraged millions of young people to pay attention to the global conference centered on climate change.”
In 2021, female singers, whose social media accounts are followed by tens of millions of users, posted video clips to encourage young people to strengthen their culture regarding climate change.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, named the Black Pink band, which was founded in 2016, an ambassador for the United Nations goals related to sustainable development. King Charles III has been involved in environmental issues for many years, and delivered the opening speech at COP26 in Glasgow.
He is expected to arrive in the UAE next week to participate in the COP28 conference.
