On their fourth “Kind of Folk” album, the Trio Groupa – which specializes in northern European music – drifts far south, to the Iberian Peninsula and to some of its most important musical traditions. They have found experienced tour guides for this. For example the multi-instrumentalist and singer Vanesa Muela, who specializes in music from Castile and Leòn and plays various percussion instruments. The young singer, actress and puppeteer Sofia Andriana Portugal is responsible for the traditional Portuguese music. The fascinating Basque percussion duo Ttukunak Txalaparta forms another small but important element of the musical fabric of Iberia.
Mats Edén (fiddle, viola d’amore, Hardanger fiddle, accordion) not only founded Groupa in 1980, he is also the artistic heart and the only one who still holds the fort from the quintet at that time. The group initiated the development of progressive Swedish folk music. Numerous, changing well-known members form the musical memory of Groupa.
Today Groupa is a trio consisting of two impressive old Swedes, besides Edén Jonas Simonson plays various flutes and bass clarinet, and the Norwegian Terje Insungset on drums, percussion and jaw harp. “Kind of Folk. Vol. 4: Iberia” is a particularly varied album full of poetry resulting from the encounter of two very different cultures.
