While being investigated for various corruption allegations of the Ssangbangwool Group, former chairman Kim Seong-tae, who had fled abroad, was caught in Thailand.
In addition, Yang Seon-gil, the current chairman of Ssangbang-ul, was also arrested along with former chairman Kim.
According to the prosecution, former Chairman Kim and Chairman Yang were caught by local police at a golf course in Thailand around 7:30 pm today.
Former Chairman Kim left for Singapore at the end of May last year ahead of the prosecution’s seizure and search, and then moved to Thailand and was on the run for nearly eight months.
Prosecutors have been focusing on securing new recruits, including interpol red notices for the two presidents and invalidation of passports, while freezing stocks worth tens of billions of won owned by former chairman Kim under borrowed names from being arbitrarily disposed of.
Former Chairman Kim and others have to go through the process of being deported from Thailand due to invalidated passports, but if they file a lawsuit denying repatriation to the country, it is expected that it will take some time to enter the country.
Previously arrested in Thailand in early December of last year, Mr. Kim, former chairman of the Ssangbangwool Group, who was known as the ‘Safe Keeper’, also filed a lawsuit to deny extradition to the Thai court immediately following the arrest, and the lawsuit is currently in progress.
Prosecutors plan to consult immediately with Thai authorities to repatriate former chairman Kim and others to Korea as soon as possible.
