Kim Cattrall’s Return as Samantha Jones in And Just Like That Season 2: The Long-Awaited Reunion Finally Happens

It has been 85 days since the return of Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones in the second season of And Just Like That was announced – and the torturous wait to see the scene in question finally came to an end on Thursday with a brief, but happy long-distance call across the Atlantic. This scene marked the actress’ first screen appearance in the sequel to Sex and the Citywhich was officially renewed for a third season earlier this week.

Perhaps sensing this long-awaited reunion, the series is quick to reveal the appearance of Samantha: “Hello, London”, says Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, in the first moments of the season 2 finale. She speaks to Samantha, who calls her from the back of a car to solemnly announce that she will not be able to attend her dinner, nicknamed The Last Supper. Blame it on a flight delay — or, in fact, the long-rumored feud between the two actresses.

But despite the brevity of the speaking time, Samantha confirms some things: she is still in contact with Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis); she feels close enough to Carrie to show up unannounced at her dinner; and she can joke regarding her old life as a New Yorker. After paying homage to Carrie’s “fabulous, fabulous apartment,” which she will officially never set foot in once more, Samantha takes on a fake British accent as “Annabelle Bronstein.” Fans of the series will remember that Samantha uses the lost membership card of this famous Annabelle in episode 10 of season 6 of Sex and the City to enjoy the pool at the Soho House.

Here is their interaction:

Carrie: Hello, London. What’s going on, lady?
Samantha: My flight is three hours late, Carrie. I will not be able to arrive in time.
Carrie: In time for what?
Samantha: The last meal. Miranda and Charlotte told me everything. I was going to surprise you.
Carrie: Oh, my God. Well, you succeeded. I am very surprised.
Samantha: The fog has finally lifted, but the team? To absent subscribers. Oh, I’m furious!
Carrie: Well, no, no, no, don’t worry. See you tomorrow.
Samantha: Honey, I just left Heathrow. I was going to take the first flight back tomorrow morning.
Carrie: Wait a minute… were you going to drive all the way to New York for one night?
Samantha: Well, it’s your apartment and I had to pay my respects. So put me on speakerphone. Go ahead, put me on speakerphone, and hold the phone.
Carrie: Alright, you’re on speakerphone.
Samantha: Thank you for everything, fucking fabulous, fabulous apartment.
Carrie: Uh, Samantha, do you have an English accent?
Samantha: Who is Samantha? It’s Annabelle Bronstein. I’m from Injah, Cheerio. And have a nice evening.

“If I had to come back, I had to come back with the style of Samantha”

Kim Cattrall, who has made it clear that she didn’t like being in a situation, even for an hourwhere she is not having fun, shot her only scene in New York on March 22 without contact with Sarah Jessica Parker or the director of the series Michael Patrick King, had reported Variety has the end of May.

Details on her appearance were scarce at the time, but in June Kim Cattrall listed some of her terms for reprising Samantha’s role on the show. The View“It’s very interesting to get a call from the head of HBO saying, ‘What can we do?'” Among his terms announced during that phone call with Max’s CEO, Casey Bloys featured the return of the famous costume designer from Sex and the City, Patricia Fieldin the lap of And Just Like That : « I said to myself that if I had to come back, I had to come back with the style of Samantha. And that’s what we’ve done! »

Michael Patrick King, who wrote and directed Cattrall’s special appearance, said to Forbes before the start of the season: “What is interesting with Samantha and And Just Like That, is that I have the impression that she has always been part of the series. She lives in London and texts Carrie, mostly because Kim Cattrall said, “I retired Samantha for a while, or forever,” and that was the reality. Then this year, all of a sudden, something shifted emotionally in the universe. Fans created something of a multiversal whirlwind of excitement on the 25th anniversary of Sex and the City and desire to see them all once more. »

“All of a sudden, Kim came out and said, ‘I’m going to play Samantha for you, for this little treat.’ I don’t know if it’s the 25th anniversary nostalgia, which is awesome. For me, it’s a great pleasure to give to the fans. I won’t tell you what you’ll see, because I’m furious that you know you’re going to see it. My goal was to keep it as secret as we did Big’s death, but that didn’t happen. She appeared as if by magic. It was fun writing Samantha once more. It’s great to see her in the series. »

Just as Carrie orders another round of Cosmopolitans at the end of the season, it’s hard to resist the hope that another serving of Samantha is still on the menu.
