Earlier, Ismail Haniyeh’s funeral prayer was performed at the Imam Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahab Mosque in Doha, the capital of Qatar, while his burial will be held in a cemetery in Lusail, north of Doha.

According to Jamaat-e-Islami in Pakistan, its emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman went to Doha to attend the funeral prayer of Ismail Haniya, while Maulvi Abdul Kabir, the deputy prime minister of the Taliban in Afghanistan, also arrived in Qatar.

Protests were held in many cities of Pakistan on Friday itself. Protests were also held in Lahore and Karachi to express solidarity with the Palestinian people.

It was further said that ‘this House expresses its support for the Palestinian brothers and expresses its condolences on the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh.’

The resolution also demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Later, while speaking in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that he is grateful to the House for the approval of this resolution.

Among other events in connection with the Day of Mourning, the funeral prayer of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was also performed in absentia after noon prayer on Friday.

The coalition parties included in the government of Pakistan, while expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine and condemning the Israeli brutality, announced in a meeting on Thursday that August 2 will be observed as a day of mourning in the country.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Ulema Council has also announced a day of mourning for the oppressed Palestinian Muslims across the country on the appeal of the government.

Chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi said in a statement issued on Thursday that peaceful protest will be organized on August 2 after Friday prayer gatherings across the country to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.

Who was Ismail Haniya?

Ismail Haniyeh has been the face of Hamas’s international diplomacy and was part of the cease-fire negotiations during the Israeli offensive on Gaza.

Born in northern Gaza in 1962, Ismail Haniyeh received his early education as a refugee at a United Nations school.

He was associated with the Palestinian freedom struggle in his youth and spent several times in Israeli jails in the 80s and 90s.

Ismail Haniyeh was the personal secretary of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the founder of Hamas.

In 2017, Ismail Haniyeh was appointed head of Hamas’ political office, the highest office of the group’s leaders. Being the head of the Political Bureau, Haniyeh was also called the head of Hamas.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has repeatedly targeted Ismail Haniyeh and his family members.

According to Hamas, three sons of Ismail Haniyeh, Hazm, Amir and Muhammad, were also killed in an attack by the Israeli Air Force in April this year. Four grandchildren of Ismail Haniya (including three girls and one boy) were also killed in the attack.
