At least three people were killed and five others injured in a shootout during a motorcycle rally in the US state of New Mexico, according to local authorities. Those involved in Saturday’s shooting in the small town of Red River have been arrested, Mayor Linda Calhoun told local media Questa Del Rio News. She did not give the exact number of arrests.

According to the mayor, the shots were fired between hostile gangs. Neither police officers and other emergency services nor bystanders were hit by the bullets.

According to local media reports, the exchange of fire occurred on Saturday followingnoon (local time) during the annual motorcycle rally in Red River on the occasion of Memorial Day, a public holiday in the United States. Around 20,000 motorcyclists took part this year.

Eyewitness Eddie Cook described scenes of chaos following the first shots were fired on local station KOAT. “People ran past where we were standing and yelled, ‘There’s shooting over there,'” he said. “While everyone was running past us, I heard the shots too.”

After the shooting, the mayor of the nearby city of Taos imposed a night curfew, Taos News reported. He also temporarily banned the sale of alcohol.
