(CNN) The Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, USA, began erupting early in the morning. This was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

A webcam on the summit of Kilauea volcano caught signs that an eruption had begun within its crater at around 4:44 a.m. local time on Saturday, Hawaii Volcano Observatory said in a statement.

The eruptive activity is said to be confined to the crater, and the observatory will reassess damage estimates while monitoring the eruption.

The alert level for Kilauea volcano has been raised to red “Warning”.

The eruption is currently confined to Volcanoes National Park, with the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeting, “No signs of threat to residential areas at this time.”

USGS live footage shows lava erupting from the top of Kilauea volcano.

The park is open 24 hours a day and the Park Service expects thousands of people to come to watch the eruption. We are calling on people not to step out of designated routes or observatories, or to enter areas near the eruption.

Kilauea volcano erupted in January, and signs of “increased destabilization” were observed in May.

A 2018 eruption destroyed hundreds of homes in southeastern Hawaii and filled Kapoho Bay with lava.
