Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Chronic kidney disease affects 1 in 10 adults worldwide, according to the official website of the Saudi Ministry of Health.
If left untreated, the disease can be fatal.
The primary function of the body’s kidneys, which are regarding the size of your fist, is to remove toxins from the body. They also help control blood pressure, produce red blood cells, and maintain bone health.
The official account of the Qassim Health Assembly explained in a tweet on “Twitter” how to maintain kidney health in several ways:
Keep your kidneys healthy with these steps:
- Drink enough water, at the rate of 3 liters per day
- Avoid excessive intake of protein products to build muscle
- Have an annual kidney function test
- Avoid smoking
- Reduce the amount of salt you consume
- Avoid overuse of pain relievers and folk medicines
- Eat fruits and vegetables daily
Remember, changes or damage to your kidneys can cause them to fail, according to the official website of the US Centers for Disease Control and Control (CDC).
If they fail, hemodialysis (i.e. dialysis) will be required several times a week.
You may also need a kidney transplant.
