Kidney Health Awareness: A Mother’s Gift of Life

March is Kidney Health Month and a mother, who donated one of her kidneys to her son several years ago, took the opportunity to remind people of the importance of taking care of them.

“The kidneys are like a swimming pool filter. The filter filters the water. The kidneys filter our blood,” explained Sylvie Charbonneau on LCN.

The latter discovered about ten years ago that her son, who was in his mid-twenties, had been suffering from kidney disease since birth.

“As kidney diseases are silent diseases, that is to say there are almost no symptoms, it was discovered very late,” she said. When we discovered him, his kidney function was functioning at 25%.”

The lady said that the decision to give her a kidney came naturally.

“I had already seen a report on living donation. I knew it was happening. So I said: tell me what I should do, I will give you a kidney,” she stressed.

After several examinations, the doctors gave the green light and Ms. Charbonneau was able to undergo the procedure.

“I considered that I was giving myself two beautiful gifts, because by giving a kidney to my boy, I was finding him again. Her health had declined greatly, she said. I was scanned from head to toe. I have never had such a thorough medical examination. I told myself that I was giving myself a bit of a gift, because if I have something, we’re going to find out.”

Ms. Charbonneau now encourages people who suffer from certain illnesses to go see a doctor.

“It is certain that people who have diabetes or hypertension are more at risk [de développer des troubles rénaux]“, she illustrated.

She also recalled the importance of good lifestyle habits.

“It is often said that you should avoid salt. The most important thing is not the salt we put on our plate, but the salt we absorb in processed foods, said Ms. Charbonneau. You have to stay in shape and exercise.”

Sylvie Charbonneau hopes that her story will convince people to sign their organ donation card.
