Kidney failure: half of undiagnosed patients – A la une

09 mars 2023

In France, 5.7 million patients suffer from chronic renal failure. The complications of this pathology generate an increased risk of early death. But can be prevented by access to early detection. Let’s take stock on the occasion of World Kidney Day, organized this March 9th.

“More than 5 million people in France are affected by a chronic renal failuremore or less severe”, supports the French-speaking Society of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation (SFNDT). And “nearly 90,000 patients suffer from severe chronic kidney disease”, requiring dialysis for 49,271 patients currently in France. Or a kidney transplant.

The most serious diseases affecting the kidney are chronic nephropathy, or even vascular, congenital and hereditary diseases. In the long term, they lead to complete dysfunction of the organ, which then becomes unable to filter the blood effectively.

Take care of the kidneys and the heart

“The leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease is cardiovascular disease”, continues Prof. Patrick Rossignol, nephrologist and vascular doctor, member of the SFNDT. More specifically, cardiovascular complications relate to hypertension, diabetes and are often induced by smoking.

Et “the number of years of life lost due to cardiovascular disease increases proportionally with the severity of chronic kidney disease”. For these reasons, we offer “a cardio-renal approach, bringing together heart and kidney experts to better treat kidney failure and cardiovascular diseases”testifies Professor Patrick Rossignol.

Towards early detection

The problem is that chronic renal failure remains “Often an asymptomatic disease until a very advanced stage, which can lead to serious complications and a risk of premature death”recall the specialists of the French Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (F-CRIN).

In detail, one out of two patients does not know that he suffers from kidney disease. And when it is supported, renal dysfunction is already well underway. Lack of early diagnosis, “the aging of the arteries and the heart is accelerated”, explains Professor Rossignol. Reason why early detection has its place: “All patients over 60 who are diabetic, hypertensive, obese or suffering from cardiovascular diseases should therefore be screened once a year”. How ? “By carrying out a blood test and a urine analysis. »
