Kidnapping of Alex Saab sets a serious precedent

This Thursday morning, the Simón Bolívar Room of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in Caracas, hosted an important forum on the unilateral coercive measures as extortion policy of the United States, with emphasis on the case of the Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab. The opening words were given by Foreign Minister Carlos Faría. in his speech warned of the “serious precedent” set in world diplomacy by the kidnapping of the special envoy more than two years ago.

«It was absolutely impossible to stop him, at least according to what International Law says», sentenced. Nevertheless, “Not only was he kidnapped in Cape Verde, but also due to an irregular process, he was also kidnapped by the US administration. He has been confined for months and subjected to extreme conditions that affect his physical and psychological health; but also we know from his relatives that he stands firm in defense of everything he fought for«.

“Alex Saab has not bowed down nor is he going to bow down in the conditions he finds himself in”added emphatically the head of Venezuelan diplomacy, Carlos Faría.

In that sense, “This planted a very serious precedent, very delicatethat tomorrow they can go against those countries that at this time do not express their rejection of these measures that the US applies openly, almost without any kind of reproach from international institutions», said.

Faria argued that Alex Saab “took a step forward” for help in the perhaps most difficult years of the blockade, even knowing the risks he was running. That’s why, “We are proud of him and we greatly appreciate his courage in helping the people get through this difficult situation”he expressed.

He added that «Traitors leaked information, the enemy found his location and he was arrested in an African country that was also a colony at some point and the object of aggression; but their leaders of the time did not know how to take the step that was expected of them. A brave step of responding negatively to the claims of violating the law that accompanied the diplomat.

The world is changing

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Carlos Faría explained that the unilateral coercive measures that the US imposes on countries like Venezuela and Cuba «seek to create unrestdirectly affect our people. This so that in turn our people could direct their discontent towards the constitutional government of President Nicolás Maduro. But, for the most part, the people have not allowed themselves to be led in the wrong way and have managed to maintain their firmness and political clarity to rather defend their government ».

He warned that the United States intends to continue carrying out its role as ruler of the world, without the considerations of the only organization that has that right, which is the United Nations. “But that world is changing (…) The world sees how the Venezuelan people have responded. Despite what was expected to happen, we are experiencing a second year of recovery”.

He also said that there are certainly governments that “They have had to bow to that political line of an alleged punishment towards our country”. Nevertheless, «A large majority supports the cause of the Bolivarian Revolution», «We enjoy great world support, which must be channeled towards an international protest». «That has to become a great world movement that goes against these practices,” he urged.

Finally, the Chancellor asked to make these activities a constant in the collective “dynamics of struggle”.

Where are we going to stop?

Previously, lawyer Laila Tajeldine, a member of the Alex Saab Free Movementwho served as moderator forAt the forum, he questioned that «due to an ideological difference or desire, countries are subject to the dispossession of their goods and assets. Or to subject their officials to persecution».

He commented that the case of Alex Saab is unprecedented in history. When the US has done something similar in the past, “As soon as they confirm that they are diplomatic officials, on the basis of international conventions and immunity, they release them immediately”.

«Where are we going to stop if everything continues like this; If the form of extortion that the US has carried out in recent years continues to expand on international illegality?»Tajeldine pondered finally.
