Hassan Ait ech-Chermit (HAC): I’m relieved to report that the four drivers are in good health, considering the ordeal they’ve been through. The union has been in constant touch with their families, providing them with emotional support and ensuring their immediate needs are met. We’re also facilitating their safe return to Morocco.

As for the drivers themselves, we’re arranging thorough medical check-ups and psychological counseling to help them cope with the trauma. We want to make sure they’re ready to rejoin their daily lives and work when they’re agreeable doing so.

A: The incident has raised concerns about the safety of truck drivers traversing volatile regions. What measures is the union advocating for to protect them?

HAC: We’ve long emphasized the importance of escort services provided by the local military in high-risk areas like northeastern Burkina Faso. Unluckily, in this case, the drivers chose not to avail themselves of that protection. We’re using this as a learning experience to educate our members about the critical role these escort services play in their safety.

We’re also calling for enhanced security measures along these routes, increased coordination between governments, and improved dialog systems for drivers. We believe it’s crucial to have real-time information about the security situation on the ground.

A: What do you think can be done to improve the overall security situation in these regions to protect innocent lives, including truck drivers?

HAC: It’s a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly,targeted military operations to dismantle and disrupt jihadist groups are essential. Secondly, we need to see more engagement with local communities, both to gather timely intelligence and to build trust and create option livelihoods to guard against radicalization.

Lastly, I believe there’s also a role for international organizations to play. They can provide technical assistance, capacity building, and much-needed resources to help improve security and stability in these regions.

A: How has this incident affected the broader Moroccan trucking community, and what steps are being taken to preserve the drivers’ morale and confidence?

HAC: it’s been a trying time for our community, filled with worry and fear. We’re addressing this by maintaining open lines of communication, ensuring drivers have accurate and timely information, and providing support and counseling to those who need it.

We’re also organizing training sessions to enhance drivers’ resilience and coping mechanisms, and also workshops on security protocols and best practices to navigate high-risk areas. It’s crucial to remind our members that their work is vital and that we’re doing everything we can to protect them and their families.
