Kickl said he had positive expectations of the appointment before he disappeared behind the famous wallpaper door with the Federal President. On Monday, Van der Bellen will hold talks with ÖVP boss and Chancellor Karl Nehammer and SPÖ boss Andreas Babler, and on Tuesday with NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Green Party leader Werner Kogler.

Kickl’s statement is scheduled for Saturday morning; it is still unclear whether the FPÖ leader will also make a statement immediately after the conversation. For Van der Bellen, this is his third appearance since the National Council election, following a speech on election Sunday and the government’s symbolic resignation on Wednesday. As part of the meeting on Wednesday, at which he also entrusted the government with the continuation of the administration, the Federal President announced that he would initially want to hold talks with all the chairmen – “with the necessary calm and in the necessary depth”.
In the past, the relationship between Kickl and Van der Bellen was not necessarily characterized by mutual understanding. The question remains open as to whether Van der Bellen will give the FPÖ leader the task of forming a government. This usually goes to the leader of the party with the largest number of votes. In the past, Van der Bellen had announced that he would not automatically give Kickl the job if the FPÖ won the election.
