Kickl wants to build on “common ground with Van der Bellen”.

Democracy and human rights as well as fundamental and freedom rights are just as important to him as Van der Bellen, said the cheerful FPÖ chairman before the start of his party’s committee meetings on Wednesday afternoon. It is unlikely that a decision will be made today as to who will run for President of the National Council.

In this regard, Kickl pointed out that parties always make such decisions just before the inaugural meeting of the National Council, which is due in three weeks: “We will do it the same way.” The FPÖ has so many suitable candidates that the other parties would lick their fingers if they had them.

The other members of the party executive committee also did not want to decide who should run for the Freedom Party as National Council President. The most likely candidates are the third National Council President Norbert Hofer, who has also suffered from the other parties, and Ombudsman Walter Rosenkranz, who could move back to the National Council. He clearly doesn’t rule this out, as he said to the executive committee when asked whether he could take over the office: “We’ll see.”

“We’re here to party”

As far as possible government participation by the FPÖ, which emerged as the strongest force in the National Council election, Lower Austria’s state leader Udo Landbauer, the Upper Austrian state chairman Manfred Haimbuchner and the Tyrolean FP chairman Markus Abwerzger did not want to commit. Today we are here to celebrate, it was said in unison. Carinthian regional chief Erwin Angerer exuded confidence, assuming that a good solution would come out after a few weeks.

Of course, Kickl had few kind words for the potential partners. After the election, the two former state parties gave the impression that the voter was wrong: “But the voter is right,” emphasized the FPÖ leader, just as it had been in the previous elections. The FPÖ stands for change and was therefore elected.

For the explorations with the other parties, Kickl wants to put together a team today that will cover the different subject areas. Relevant decisions in the Presidium and Board of Directors should be communicated in writing. The FPÖ leader will only make his next statement after his conversation with Van der Bellen. This is also a question of respect for the Federal President, he said in his statement to the FPÖ parliamentary club.
