KHNP applied for 727.7 billion won for maintenance cost of Wolseong Unit 1

It was found that Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has applied for a maintenance cost of 720 billion won to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in relation to the early closure of Wolsong Unit 1.

According to the ‘Application for Compensation of KHNP’s Wolsong Unit 1 Cost’ submitted by the Ministry of Industry on the 16th, KHNP submitted an application for maintenance cost of 727.746 billion won to the Ministry of Industry and Energy in June.

This cost includes the cost of equipment investment, the cost of purchasing goods, and the maintenance cost, which were put in to obtain approval for continuous operation until this year.

The maintenance cost is paid from the Electric Power Industry Infrastructure Fund, which is set aside by deducting 3.7% of the electricity bill.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has received an application for KHNP and is investigating the facts.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, “We also need to watch the ongoing trial on Wolsong Unit 1.

Wolsong Unit 1, which started commercial operation in 1983, is the second nuclear power plant in Korea following Kori Unit 1, and was suspended in 2012 due to the expiration of its design lifespan (30 years). Permission was granted and development resumed.

Then, due to the Moon Jae-in government’s policy to phase out nuclear power, the KHNP board of directors decided to close it early in June 2018, and in December 2019, the National Security Council confirmed the permanent suspension.
