Warsaw lifts reservations on aid to Ukraine, diplomatic source says

Poland lifted its reservations on Thursday on a European compromise including macro-financial aid of 18 billion euros for Ukraine following an appeal by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a European summit, learned Agence France-Presse (AFP) from diplomatic sources. “The Poles accepted the four points of the compromise”which includes aid to Ukraine, announced several delegations. “They must confirm this agreement by written procedure, like the other member states”said a diplomat.

Ahead of this summit bringing together European heads of state and government in Brussels, Warsaw refused to endorse the compromise reached on Monday by the ambassadors of the Twenty-Seven to lift the blockage exercised until then by Hungary.

On his arrival at the summit, the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, defended himself from blocking aid to Ukraine. “They defend this line, but the fact is that they block”opposing another part of the package, however, said a European official on condition of anonymity.

The Polish Prime Minister argued that Warsaw refused to “link completely different subjects”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky got involved in the debate during a videoconference intervention during the summit.

Noting that the support granted to kyiv had become hostage to the dissensions between Europeans, he expressed the wish that “the fight for peace in Ukraine and throughout Europe” don’t hang on “misunderstandings and controversies between some EU member states”.
