Russia intends to continue to fight in Ukraine, since it considers the Ukrainian territories captured during the war to be its own. This was stated by Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov. According to the Kremlin, the Zaporozhye, Kherson, Lugansk and Donetsk regions of Ukraine belong to Russia and are “partially occupied by the Kyiv regime.”
Peskov called the fighting in Ukraine a “war” rather than a “special military operation,” a term Russian authorities have used since the full-scale invasion of the neighboring country. The word “war” in relation to the fighting in Ukraine in Russia is, in fact, prohibited from being used in the media and in the public space. For this, people are fined under the article on “discrediting” the Russian army.
“After the collective West entered, it turned into a war for us. This is not related to any legal changes, it is a special military operation de jure, but de facto, in fact, for us it turned into a war following The collective West is increasingly directly increasing the level of its involvement in the conflict,” Peskov said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense is planning a new massive recruitment into the army. The publication “Verstka” writes regarding this, citing four sources close to the military department and Putin’s administration. According to them, as part of this campaign, 300 thousand new people can be recruited. Interlocutors of “Verstka” note that reservists can be forcibly conscripted into the troops, as well as conscripts can be forced to sign a contract. This is due to the fact that the flow of people willing to go to fight with Ukraine is drying up. The recruitment rate has dropped significantly. For comparison: at the beginning of 2023, 500-600 people a day applied to the contract center with the Ministry of Defense. Now there are 20–30 people, the publication’s sources say. One of the goals of the new massive army recruitment, they say, is to free up experienced soldiers for the attack on Kharkov.
“The next plan is Kharkov with the preservation of the city. And this is only possible in the case of encirclement. There are 300 thousand people missing. Therefore, everything is ready for mobilization 2.0,” a source in the internal political bloc of the presidential administration told Vestka. He added that “nobody wants to turn Kharkov into a second Mariupol,” on the contrary, “there is an idea to make it a showcase of the fact that Russians “know how to fight in a civilized manner.”
About a possible new mobilization on the eve of the spring conscription, which starts in Russia on April 1, Present Time spoke with the press attache of the “Walk through the Woods” foundation, which helps Russians avoid military service and being sent to war in Ukraine.
“Everyone who will be affected by the spring draft is very worried. The number of questions, requests and problems that people face in connection with the draft is gigantic. Firstly, everyone understood perfectly well that the authorities, military registration and enlistment offices, and the Ministry of Defense chose roundups as their favorite tool for recruiting new military personnel.
There will be raids in institutions, in dormitories, perhaps even on the streets, as happened in the fall. How to protect yourself? A student cannot simply not go to college during the entire conscription period, he cannot simply not live in a dormitory, he cannot simply go to the village to visit his grandmother and sit there all this time. Therefore this is a serious question.
The second problem is that the age has been raised to 30 years. If we compare it with the last autumn conscription, then there were big problems for freshmen who did not want to be registered, who were not given deferments, and all sorts of bureaucratic delays were arranged. Now the same thing will happen to graduate students: they will catch them and influence them in every possible way. They will apparently be the target audience.
This spring conscription will be absolutely disastrous and terrible for Moscow. There the centralization of the work of military registration and enlistment offices began. All files of all conscripts under 30 years of age are stored in one military registration and enlistment office on Yablochkova Street. If you are a student or simply a person of military age with registration and residence permit in Moscow, you need to be careful. This call will be much stricter in Moscow than in other regions.
