The sleepy night of February 2nd was shattered in Kharkiv by another brutal reminder of war’s indiscriminate cruelty. A Russian drone strike targeted a civilian enterprise in the Slobodsky district, leaving behind a scene of devastation.

“According to preliminary data, the enemy hit the Slobodsky district of Kharkiv. At this moment, we haven’t received any data about victims. We’re currently checking the data,” confirmed Oleg Sinegubov, the Chairman of the Kharkiv Regional Military Management.

The attack sent shockwaves through the community, with reports instantly spreading of a massive fire engulfing a large building.Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed the attack, stating that “an enemy drone targeted a civilian enterprise” in the Slobodsky district. Local emergency services responded swiftly, dispatching fire crews and rescue teams to battle the blaze.

The State Emergencies Ministry confirmed the drone strike, detailing its horrific impact: “Tonight, the enemy struck an UAV through the territory of a civilian enterprise in the Slobodsky district of Kharkiv. As a result of the shelling, a large-scale fire with an area of 2000 meters in the production and storage building occurred.”

A massive operation unfolded as 45 rescuers and 8 units of equipment rushed to the scene. For hours, thay battled the inferno, eventually managing to extinguish the blaze by 10:00 am on February 2nd.The fire had consumed an alarming 2,000 square meters of the production and storage building, leaving a path of ruin in its wake.

We spoke with Oleksii Petrochenko, a resident who witnessed the terrifying scene, to understand the emotional toll of this latest attack on Kharkiv.

“It was around 10 pm. We were inside, trying to sleep, when suddenly, there was this loud boom, followed by another. Everyone jumped up, scared. Then, we saw huge flames engulfing the factory building across the street. It was terrifying. smoke filled the air, and the heat was intense,” Oleksii recounted.

“People started running out of their homes, worried about loved ones. It was chaos. The whole street was bathed in red and orange light. You could hear the roaring of the flames and the screams of people. It was a nightmare,” he added.

Oleksii, like many in Kharkiv, is grappling with the heavy emotional weight of this unending conflict.

“Kharkiv has endured so much already. Every attack, every explosion, takes a toll on our mental strength. People are tired, scared, and frustrated. We just want peace, to live normal lives. This attack reminds us that peace feels distant, and fear is always lurking,” Oleksii said.

He issued a desperate plea to the world: “Please, don’t forget about us. Don’t forget the innocent lives affected by this senseless violence. we need your support, your solidarity, and your hope. We need the world to push for peace, for an end to this nightmare.”

Oleksii, how are you and your neighbors coping with the ongoing attacks? You’ve mentioned fear, but how much is it consuming your everyday life at this point?

“Kharkiv has endured so much already.

Every attack, every explosion, takes a toll on our mental strength. People are tired, scared, and frustrated. We just want peace, to live normal lives. This attack just reminds us that peace feels distant, and fear is always lurking. We live with the constant worry, the knowledge that this could happen again at any moment. ”

What message do you have for the international community as Kharkiv continues to bear the brunt of this conflict?

“Please, don’t forget about us. don’t forget the innocent lives affected by this senseless violence. We need your support, your solidarity, and your hope. We need the world to push for peace, for an end to this nightmare.”
