Archyde.com reported that Kharkiv, a large city in eastern Ukraine, announced the construction of the country’s first underground school following its subway classrooms to protect school children from attending school daily while being protected from the threat of indiscriminate bombing by Russia.
Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said on the community Telegram, “In the face of the threat of enemy missiles, underground schools can allow thousands of children to safely receive physical education.”

Since the outbreak of the war, most schools in frontline areas have been forced to switch to online teaching. The city of Kharkiv went in the opposite direction and built regarding 60 independent classrooms in subway stations before the start of school on September 1, benefiting more than 1,000 schoolchildren to maintain a sense of reality in going to school on a daily basis.
Kharkiv is the capital of Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine and the second largest city in the country, with a pre-war population of more than 1.4 million people.
Parts of the city are less than 35 kilometers from the Russian border. During the war, it was one of the fiercest frontline areas, and many residents were attacked before reaching shelter.
