Khan’s party seeks to form a government based on a religious formation

Islamabad, Feb 13 (EFE).- The party of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan indicated this Tuesday that it will rely on a Shiite party that won a single seat in last Thursday’s elections to try to form a central government in Pakistan and in its most populated province.

“We will form a coalition at the national level and in Punjab with the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM),” a Shiite minority party, a spokesman for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Raoof Hasan, said at a press conference. .

In the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khan’s party announced a coalition with the religious political party Jamaat-e-Islami.

The candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won the largest number of seats, regarding ninety of the 266 in the running, but they are still far from the simple majority of 133 parliamentarians, and the MWM only obtained one parliamentarian, so that the result of these coalitions is unknown.

The PTI won the largest number of seats despite having to field its candidates as independents following being deprived of its coveted cricket bat symbol by a court decision.

According to Pakistani electoral law, independents do not have access to the other seventy reserved seats that are allocated proportionally to parties according to electoral results, and they also need to rely on a party to form a government.

The Muslim League (PML-N) of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, for its part, obtained 79 seats, and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) took 54 representatives. Although the addition of these two formations would result in a coalition government, for the moment there has been no definitive announcement in this regard.

The PTI has alleged massive electoral fraud committed at the behest of the powerful Pakistani military, and the courts have heard numerous cases challenging the results in dozens of constituencies.

“Based on the true results of the elections, the PTI can form a government today,” said a lawyer for the party, Ali Zafar.

The favorable results for Khan at the polls have been a great surprise for Pakistan, which assumed that his imprisonment since last August, the judicial attack with several convictions in recent weeks and the dismantling of the party would seriously weaken the opponent.
