The longtime ruler of the United Arab Emirates is dead. The Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Said Al Nahjan, died on Friday at the age of 73, the state news agency reported.
The Department of Presidential Affairs announced a 40-day period of mourning and a three-day layoff from work in all departments and the private sector starting Friday. Flags in the country should be flown at half-staff.
The sheikh had been ill for a long time and had long since withdrawn from day-to-day business. His brother, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Said, is considered the de facto ruler. Nothing was known about a possible successor arrangement.
