Kevin Serna: From Adversity to Success – The Inspiring Journey of the Alianza Lima Sensation

2024-01-17 21:35:37

That image of Serna running down the right wing still spins around in the Alliance fan’s head. It seems like an indelible memory that will surely be repeated during League 1. But it contains something deeper: perhaps it is the player’s desperate attempt to get away from the time he decided to retire from football at the age of 18. When doors close and opportunities become scarce, it is difficult to break through in this sport. Kevin knew it from that moment. “Yes, at 18 I said: ‘well, I’m not in any professional club, be it lower divisions, reserves or anything.’ And, unfortunately, I stepped aside. For things in life I played in championships and they paid me for them,” he recently revealed on DirecTV Sports. It could have been the hardest moment of his until then short career, but it wasn’t.

Without that chance to do what he liked most, Serna had to overcome the difficulty and earn a living like any Peruvian would. He went from the soccer fields to serving in a restaurant, selling books or working in a junkyard, still without a fixed direction. “These are things that fill me with pride and that shaped me as a person,” commented the Colombian, showing that fortitude to not give in in the face of adversity. And as he walked down that uncertain path, his luck changed. “One day they told me to think about my decision, to reconsider it. I introduced myself to the city of Cali. I tried, I had nothing to lose and that’s when I got back into it (football). And look at me now,” his story continued.

But his best decision was to come to Peruvian football in 2021, when Los Chankas decided to bring him from Sportivo Luqueño of Paraguay to play in League 2. And the growth he had was exponential: he went from the promotion tournament to League 1, he played two years in ADT and today he is the sensation of Alianza Lima. He went from being an unknown to signing the best professional contract of his career, with a salary in line with what he demonstrates on the field and with an enormous desire to show himself to the world dressed in blue and white. His life story is a kind of miracle that does not happen every day, because sometimes talent is not enough to play football if it does not go hand in hand with opportunity.

The partnership with Barcos and the selection option

Serna left that story behind as he did with the Once Caldas defender who tried to reach him before Barcos’ goal. Today his present is as promising as the excitement that the fan feels after seeing him play on the Blue and White Night. And although it is the first game he has played with an audience, Kevin showed his credentials not only to face like a roadrunner without brakes, but also to get together with Hernán and build a kind of partnership on the field. Serna assisted the ‘Pirate’ and caused the penalty that the Argentine also converted. You don’t have to be an expert to realize the chemistry between the two, that implicit relationship that can be decisive at the least expected moment.

“The guy likes half moons (Argentine dessert), so… For every goal pass, I’ll give him at least a dozen,” Barcos commented about Serna and perhaps that phrase is reliable proof of a beautiful friendship between the two. . When there is complicity, things flow; but it needs to be sustained over time for the delight of Alianza Lima. Maybe Kevin is the partner that the ‘Pirate’ couldn’t have, or maybe he is responsible for expanding his legend through assists. Be that as it may, what the Colombian can offer is a range of attacking opportunities that will surely bring more than one joy.

And if things go well, a future call-up for Serna to the Peruvian team should not be a surprise, although for that he will have to first complete five years of residence in Peru. For now he is not eligible, but his maintains that level and convinces Jorge Fossati, seeing him with the bicolor shirt in the future is a possible option.
