Kevin Fiala’s Exclusive Blog: Los Angeles Kings’ Global Series Journey in Melbourne

Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala writes an exclusive blog directly from Melbourne, where his team takes on the Arizona Coyotes in the Global Series in the NHL’s historic Southern Hemisphere opener. The Kings lost the first match 3:5 on Saturday and are looking for revenge.

On Friday night we went to the Australian Football League final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Collingwood Magpies beat the Greater Western Sydney Giants 58-57 in front of a crowd of 97,665 to advance to the AFL’s kind of Super Bowl grand final.

And it was crazy. Pretty wild. Like there are no rules. The guys were running, going into each other, no helmets, nothing. It was probably the most amazing sport I have ever seen in my life. The fans were crazy too. They thoroughly enjoyed each encounter. It was a lot of fun.

When we played at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, it also felt a bit like a football game. A great atmosphere, a full house with a sold out auditorium of 13,097 spectators. I saw a lot of jerseys from all over the NHL there. The fans really enjoyed seeing some hits. The ice did well and so did the atmosphere. Although it was a pre-season game, it was clear that both teams wanted to win it like a normal game in the season.

Of course, for this reason too, the defeat was cruel. But it’s only the first duel, so it takes time and everything settles down. I think we did a good job. They went 4-1 up and we came back to make it 4-3 before conceding an empty net goal at the end. But if you look at the shots and the chances, I think we were better than them, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Now it’s about how we prepare for Sunday. But it’s simple. We want to play well before we go home.
