According to his words and those of his coach Pep Guardiola, Kevin De Bruyne should not return to the football fields before the New Year. His total absence should therefore amount to five months, he who had to leave the field prematurely once morest Burnley during the first match of the Premier League season.
An operation was ultimately necessary for the captain of the Red Devils: “He had already had several muscle tears, resulting in scar tissue, which is not ideal,” explains Lieven Maesschalck, renowned physiotherapist who took care of KDB’s rehabilitation. “I was present at the operation. We had to clear everything out and then put it back in place.”
Pep Guardiola on Kevin De Bruyne: “Time flies, he’s not 21 anymore”
If the Manchester City player was quickly able to begin his rehabilitation, in a light manner, Lieven Maesschalck believes that for this type of injury, it is better to take the necessary time before returning: “In high-level sport, the number one rule in the healing process, it is respect for biology. It all depends on the size, location, muscle, tendon… Is this the first time or a recurrence? These are all things that can come into play.”
“The biggest cause of this type of injury is fatigue”, specifies Maesschalck who believes that high-level athletes are overextended, “there are more and more meetings and there is also the mental load of all trips.”
But the physiotherapist confirms that if the recovery goes well, Kevin De Bruyne’s hamstrings will not necessarily constitute his weak point: “The body has the incredible gift of being able to recover well.”
