After several months of legal battle, Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner have finally reached an agreement for their divorce. The actor ended up giving in to his ex-wife’s requests and will pay her much more money than what the prenuptial contract stipulates.
As TMZ reported Tuesday morning, the model and businesswoman signed a three-page agreement following a judge informed her that their prenuptial agreement would be enforced. If he wanted to appeal, Baumgartner would have had to repay Costner more than a million dollars and pay his attorney’s fees.
Although the details of the settlement are unknown, the outlet notes that Baumgartner’s request for $850,000 in attorney fees is ruled out. However, she will receive more money than was initially stated in the prenup.
“Kevin and Christine Costner have reached an amicable and mutual agreement on the resolution of all issues relating to their divorce process,” the exes shared in a joint statement to different media.
For the past four months, Costner and Baumgartner have appeared in court to discuss the details of everything related to the separation and division of assets: from Christine’s timeline for moving out of the family home in Santa Barbara, California, to the payments of support for the children they have together, Cayden, 16, Hayes, 14, and Grace, 13.
Baumgartner, 49, filed for divorce from the Hollywood star in early May following 18 years of marriage. “With great sadness, circumstances beyond his control have occurred that have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a marriage dissolution action,” a representative for the actor said in a brief statement. And he concluded: “We ask that his, Baumgartner’s, and his children’s privacy be respected as they go through this difficult time.”
During a Santa Barbara court trial to determine child support in late August, a judge set Kevin’s monthly payments to Christine at $63,209, matching the amount he proposed following she and her attorneys had requested $175,057, above the $129,755 that the actor had been provisionally sentenced to pay.
“My biggest concern is that the court will order me to pay support that is above the needs of my children and the needs of Christine,” the actor said in a statement he made in court.
Baumgartner also stated that he was considering returning to school to obtain a college degree. “I will study the steps I should take and the studies I should do, and I will join the job market,” he said on the stand regarding how he will support himself in the future.
When Costner took the stand, he admitted that his “world has been rocked a little bit” as a result of the split. On how he plans to move forward, he said: “I have to deal with obligations that are already underway; I have a lot of responsibilities to take care of,” he continued. “I have to figure out how I am going to spend more time with the children, accompany them in this process,” added the Oscar winner for Dances with Wolves. “I’m going to need to take some time for myself. “I have a lot to contemplate: what I have to do versus what I want to do.”
Father of seven children, with two marriages under his belt and several clandestine romances, the protagonist of The Bodyguard was known for decades for his nickname as a womanizer and his long love history. However, everything seemed to have calmed down since he became a couple with the designer Christine Baumgartner, the woman who seemed to have arrived to make him settle down permanently.
Although at first the couple did not seem to have much of a future and the 20 years of difference were announced as an insurmountable obstacle, over time they were able to smooth things over and find a path together. “She told me: ‘I’m going to wait for you, but I won’t. a lot. When you come to your senses, she comes back to me.’ And she did it,” said the actor, confirming a brief separation that made him reflect and that led them to live an 18-year love story.
