Kevin Cordón, a prominent Guatemalan badminton athlete, and Waleska Soto, a hunting gun shooter, were sworn in on July 3 as the official flag bearers of the delegation that will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The badminton player, who will be present at his fifth Olympic Games, and the shooter, who will be present at her second, will carry the Guatemalan flag in the opening parade of the Paris Olympic Games.
It will be the hands of Cordón and Soto that will wave the national symbol before the eyes of the entire world when they cross the waters of the River Seine in the French capital.
The Guatemalan flag will be among the 10,500 athletes from 206 countries who will participate in Paris 2024 and will travel six kilometers from east to west of the Seine River.
Three years ago, at the Tokyo Games, Cordón came close to winning a historic medal by finishing fourth in the men’s singles badminton tournament. Now, he will go to Paris as a standard-bearer and eager for revenge.
The inauguration will be visible to all Guatemalans from 11:30 a.m. on July 26 when the festivities that will serve as the official starting point of the Paris Olympic Games begin.
Athletes are sworn in
Present at the event were Kevin Cordón, Alberto González, Érick Gordillo, Lucero Mejía, Waleska Soto, Adriana Ruano, Jean Pierre Brol, Sebastián Bermúdez, Andrés Fernández, Sophia Hernández and Jacqueline Solís, while Juan Ignacio Maegli, Luis Grijalva and José Barrondo followed the swearing-in online as they are outside Guatemala in preparation camps.
After words from the authorities, Luis Grijalva and Adriana Ruano were considered as escorts and as standard bearers, Kevin Cordón and Waleska Soto, who will have the honor and responsibility of waving the flag.
For Kevin Cordón it was an emotional ceremony, as it is the second time he will carry the national flag following the 2008 Beijing edition.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will begin on July 26 and run until August 11.
