Ketogenic diet, paleo… Some diets are canceled for the heart

A list of the 10 best diets for the heart was recently published in the journal Circulation.

The goal? To prove that lifestyle, and especially diet, is decisive if you want to improve your heart health. According to Christopher Gardner, a professor at Stanford University in California and chairman of the study’s editorial board, “doctors and clinicians do not necessarily receive nutrition training“. It was therefore important to establish reliable data for health professionals”.

Start by reducing your saturated fat intake, such as meat, THE dairy products and the industrial productswhich promote bad cholesterol.

Some of the best diets for the heart include:

  • The system of government DASH : it is the best for your heart. It consists of adopting a healthy, varied and above all low-salt diet. It favors vegetable proteins, soluble and insoluble fibres, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, “good” fats, lean animal proteins and water.
  • The system of government Ornish : More restrictive, the Ornish diet is 100% vegetarian. However, it includes a lot of nuts, which are “good” essential fats for the heart.
  • The system of government “Low Carb” (low in carbohydrates): low in carbohydrates, it is very low in sugars. It consists of favoring fish, meat, vegetables, nuts, seeds, dairy products and avoiding starchy foods (pasta, potatoes, rice, white bread) and fruits very rich in sugars.
  • The mediterranean diet : apart from the glass of wine it allows, this diet is ideal for heart health. It gives pride of place to fresh fruits and vegetables as well as omega-3s with olive oil as the star ingredient.

Heart: ketogenic and paleo diets are too restrictive

While some popular diets may be suitable for heart health, others should elicit mistrust. “Paleo and ketogenic diets have a lot of followers, but are not necessarily good for heart health,” said theAmerican Heart Association.

These are known as effective for short-term weight loss, but they are high in fat since do not involve limiting saturated fats. They are also devoid of fibers. “Eating high levels of saturated fat and low levels of fiber are both linked to the development of cardiovascular illnesses“, recalled theAmerican Heart Association.

“They are very restrictive long-term for most people,” said Christopher D. Gardner, PhD, chairman of the report’s editorial board and professor of medicine at Stanford University. “While there are likely short-term benefits and substantial weight loss, it’s not sustainable. A diet that is effective in helping an individual maintain their weight loss goals, from a practical standpoint, should be durable.
