Kerry Washington Receives Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hollywood will honor actress Kerry Washington with the latest star on the Walk of Fame. The ceremony coincides with the upcoming release of her new film, “The Six Triple Eight,” available on Netflix.
A Career Marked by Acclaim
The Walk of Fame star, the 2,797th since its inception in 1961, will be unveiled near Vine Street and Argyle Avenue in front of the W Hollywood hotel. Washington will be joined by Tyler Perry, the writer and director of “The Six Triple Eight,” and Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the acclaimed political thriller “Scandal.”
“Scandal” became a cultural phenomenon, with Washington captivating audiences in her portrayal of crisis manager Olivia Pope. Her performance earned her two Emmy nominations for outstanding lead actress in a drama series.
Washington honed her craft from a young age, captivating audiences on stage during her time at The Spence School.
Her professional acting career began with a role in the 1994 ABC Afterschool Special, “Magical Make-Over.” She found early success on television, recurring on the A&E legal drama “100 Centre Street” and appearing in episodes of “NYPD Blue” and “Law & Order.”
From Independent Drama to Superhero Blockbusters
Washington made her film debut in 2000 with the coming-of-age drama “Our Song.” She went on to work with celebrated director Spike Lee, playing the lead in “She Hate Me” (2004). Her versatility shone through in roles like the girlfriend of Chris Rock’s character in the action comedy “Bad Company” (2002) and portraying the wife of legendary musician Ray Charles, played by Jamie Foxx, in the biopic “Ray” (2004).
Her filmography reflects her diverse abilities, ranging from the superhero film “Fantastic Four” and its sequel, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” to the action-thriller “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” alongside Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. She delivered a powerful performance in “The Last King of Scotland” (2006), playing the wife of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
A Multifaceted Talent: Producer and Voice Actress
Washington’s artistry extends beyond acting. She’s earned five Emmy nominations as a producer, winning in 2020 for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times’,” a live special celebrating classic sitcoms.
She also received nominations for “American Son” and the powerful miniseries “Confirmation” – for which she also served as an executive producer and portrayed Anita Hill.
“Little Fires Everywhere,” a Hulu miniseries, showcased her strengths as she brought to life a talented artist struggling to make ends meet.
Washington has lent her distinctive voice to the animated world, lending her voice talents to several episodes of “The Simpsons.” More recent roles include the Netflix comedy-drama “UnPrisoned,” and the fantasy film “The School for Good and Evil.”
“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” the third installment in the popular film series, starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, is in post-production and will be available to stream on Netflix in 2025.
