Thiruvananthapuram: From Monday morning, fines will be issued for road violations using AI cameras. Transport Minister Antony Raju announced that the AI cameras, which are currently working on an experimental basis, will start working from 8 am tomorrow. The Minister of Transport said that if a two-wheeler is accompanied by two adults and a child below 12 years of age, no fine will be charged for the time being.

The state government has asked the Center to amend the law to allow two adults and one child below the age of 12 to travel on a two-wheeler. The minister also informed that till a final decision is taken in this regard, no fine will be charged for traveling with one more child below 12 years of age. But helmets are mandatory for all children between the ages of 12 and 4 years.

An expert committee was appointed to check the efficiency of the equipment. They checked the 726 cameras installed by the Motor Vehicles Department and found that 692 of them are operational. The remaining 34 cameras will be made operational soon.

The minister also informed that the priority in levying fines is for violations like helmet, seat belt, use of mobile phone, crossing red signal, traveling with more than two people in a two-wheeler, excessive speed and dangerous parking. With this, Kerala is becoming the first state in the country to implement an AI traffic system with 24-hour infrared cameras, the minister said.

Those aggrieved in any way regarding the fine can appeal to the Enforcement RTOs of the respective districts. At present appeals must be made in person. A system for this will come online in two months.

Warning signs are now placed where the cameras are. The Minister informed that the Motor Vehicle Department has been instructed to publish the violations detected daily through the AI camera system.

Antony Raju said that on June 2 alone, 240,746 violations were detected by the AI cameras. Since the cameras started functioning, they have helped the police and excise to track down the accused in many cases.

The minister also stated that no new law has come in Kerala since the introduction of AI camera. No one can be exempted from AI cameras. The Central Act has stated which vehicles are to be exempted. It will be implemented in the same way. The minister said that it is still going like that. The minister’s response is in response to a question whether VVIPs will be exempted from this.
