The Kenyans imposed their law during the 89th edition of Morat-Fribourg. Elvis Tabarach taking a quintuplet in the men’s race. The favorite Lydia Korir, however, was beaten in the women’s race, settling for 2nd place behind the Ethiopian Gulume Arado. On the Swiss side, note the beautiful 4th place of Oria Liaci.

In the absence of 2022 winner Tadesse Abraham, resting a week following beating his Swiss marathon record in Berlin, the runners from the highlands, as expected, took the leading roles over the 17.17 km of the course. There were still four of them able to aim for victory at the start of the climb of Sonnaz.

Favorite Cornelius Kangogo was the first to give up, with William Kibor breaking down shortly following. Elvis Tabarach, who won the recent Greifensee Race, made a decisive acceleration shortly following the Porte de Morat to win in 51’52”0 with a 16”6 lead over his runner-up Erick Ndiema. Kibor finished 3rd at 28”1.

Rolli best of come-next

Best Swiss, the Bernese Dominik Rolli (6th) was the first non-Kenyan to cross the finish line on Place Georges-Python, with 1’36”8 behind the winner. Best Swiss, the Valaisanne Oria Liaci (22 years old) failed at the foot of a 100% African podium, but 3’40”1 behind the winner.

Gulume Arado won in 1h00’43”6, forcing the decision on the last climb, the Route des Alpes. The Ethiopian outsider, 13th in the Lisbon half-marathon last March, was 11”1 ahead of Lydia Korir. The podium is completed by another Kenyan, Hilda Kiptum (at 53”8).
