Kenyan President William Ruto on Friday offered to host a mediation process between warring parties in Sudan to help restore peace in the country, media reports.

Mr Ruto said Kenya had “a strong track record of effectively facilitating peacemaking and political conflict resolution in the region”.

“We make this offer in a spirit of brotherhood, peace and solidarity,” he said.

He added that Kenya firmly believed that a peacefully negotiated solution was within reach in Sudan.

Mr. Ruto further urged the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union (AU) and the UN to “mobilise an effective international coalition to support a comprehensive peacebuilding program in Sudan. “.

According to Mr. Ruto, there is now a real possibility of resolving outstanding issues through peaceful negotiations. This will, he said, “restore peace, security and stability in Sudan, in line with the broader objective of transforming the Horn of Africa and East Africa, in general , into a peaceful and secure center of productivity, globally competitive industry, and shared and lasting prosperity”.

Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out on April 15.

Hundreds of people were killed and thousands more injured.
