Hundreds of Kenyan doctors and other practitioners demonstrated Tuesday to demand better pay and working conditions as part of an ongoing nationwide strike that entered its fifth week.
Florence, a cancer patient, went to the Kenya Referral Hospital on Tuesday morning hoping to get treatment for her worsening leg, but she was left unattended.
She returned home and was caught up in the doctors’ strike on the streets of Nairobi.
“We didn’t receive any treatment. We waited a long time and had to leave without any medicine and my leg is deteriorating,” she said.
The doctors held signs and chanted slogans once morest the Kenyan government, saying it had failed to implement a series of promises, including a collective agreement signed in 2017 following a 100-day strike during which people were died from lack of care.
“We are not going to give in to any form of intimidation and threats. And we are saying today that we are going to continue the picketing, that we are going to maintain our constitutional rights in accordance with Article 37 of the Constitution,” said a protesting doctor. Emmanuel Odhiambo.
