Kenya says goodbye to the 21 children who were victims of the tragic school fire

This Thursday, families, friends, colleagues, community members and authorities gathered to say goodbye to the 21 children between the ages of 9 and 13 who lost their lives on September 5 in a tragic fire at an elementary school in the center of Kenya.

On the night of September 5-6, a fire devastated the Hillside Endarasha Academy boys boarding school, located in Kieni, Nyeri County, where the wake was held on Thursday.

The event was attended by representatives of the Government of Kenya, including the vice president, Rigathi Gachugua, who expressed his sorrow for the loss of these “young and innocent souls.” Also present was the Secretary of State for Education, Migos Ogamba, who pledged to “hold those responsible for this incident to account”.

All of the deceased were students at the school, where the fire started around midnight on September 5-6, while most of the children were sleeping.

The school has more than 800 students, and the pavilion that was consumed by the fire housed 156 children.

«I am committed to answering the difficult questions that have been asked, such as how this tragedy could have occurred and why the answer did not come in time, fully, frankly and without fear or favoritism»then stated the Kenyan president, William Ruto, in an institutional statement in which he declared three days of national mourning.
