Several people were injured by gunfire along a highway in Kentucky (southeast), the authorities of this US state announced yesterday Saturday, stressing that the perpetrator has not yet been arrested.
Four to six people were hit by bullets, Scotty Pennington, a police spokesman in the state, told media without elaborating on their condition.
The new gun attack was launched in Laurel County, about 145 kilometers south of the city of Lexington, along Interstate 75, a major north/south highway that crosses half of the US.
There are “seriously injured” but no deaths have been reported at this stage, local news station WYMT reported, citing the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have launched a manhunt to locate 32-year-old Joseph Couch, who they believe is a suspect in the attack, describing him as “armed and dangerous.”
Part of the highway was closed in both directions.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, urged state residents to avoid the area via X and added that “we will provide more details as they become available.”
“Please avoid I-75 (…) until further notice! Use alternative routes and don’t even come near,” called the mayor of the city of London (population 8,000), Randall Weddle, via Facebook.
The incident began to unfold just before 18:00 (local time; around 01:00 Greek time), when police were called to the area due to phone complaints that vehicles had been shot at on the highway.
