4 children sacrificed… Suspension of electricity and gas supply to 18,000 Kentucky households
The death toll from floods in eastern Kentucky has risen to 25.
Four children were also killed.
Rescue and search operations are ongoing, and the extent of the damage is expected to increase.
Another precipitation forecast also increased the possibility of additional damage.
Kentucky Governor Andy Versier said at a news conference on Monday that 25 people have been killed in flooding in the Appalachian Highlands.
“We are praying for families suffering from loss,” Versier said.
In particular, he predicted that it would take several weeks before all the victims of the heavy rains were recovered.
“I am concerned that it will take several weeks to recover the body,” he said.
Most of eastern Kentucky, which was hit by the worst floods, has stopped raining, but some areas are still submerged and roads and infrastructure are said to be submerged.
In some areas, starting on the 31st, some rain forecasts continue into next week, raising the possibility of additional rain damage.
The Kentucky Meteorological Agency said, “The water level in rivers and streams is high due to the heavy rains in the past few days.”
As of this morning, electricity and gas supply to 18,000 households in Kentucky has been cut off.
President Joe Biden has declared a federal disaster zone in Kentucky and has launched emergency relief funding.
West Virginia and southern West Virginia were also affected by the flood, resulting in power outages and loss of roads in some areas.
West Virginia declared a state of emergency in six counties, and Virginia also declared a state of emergency in the southwest.
