Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s siblings said Friday that his support for Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump is a betrayal of the family.

“Today’s decision by our brother Bobby to support Trump is a betrayal of the values our father and our family hold most dear,” five of his siblings said in a statement.

“It’s a sad ending to a sad story,” added Kathleen, Courtney, Chris, Kerry and Rory Kennedy.

Both Kennedy Jr. and his brothers are sons of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephews of former President John F. Kennedy, both prominent Democratic leaders assassinated in the 1960s.

In addition to criticizing their brother’s alignment with Trump, the Kennedys recalled his support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

“We want an America filled with hope and united by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise, and national pride. We believe in Harris and Walz,” they said.

Kennedy Jr. launched his presidential campaign as a Democrat, seeking to challenge Joe Biden in the party’s primaries, but soon decided to pursue his path as an independent.

The 70-year-old lawyer had been polling at around 15%, a figure that could have turned the outcome of the November presidential election upside down, but following several controversies his support had plummeted.

On Friday, Kennedy Jr. announced that he was suspending his campaign and his support for Trump.

The family has been highly critical of Kennedy Jr.’s presidential aspirations from the start.
