(Ecofin Agency) – KenGen, the main electricity producer in Kenya, recently launched a call for tenders to international producers of geothermal energy. The company seeks to attract investors with affordable electricity generation tariffs.
PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of the Indonesian public company PT Pertamina, is considering a partnership to develop the geothermal potential of the Longonot concession in Kenya.
PGE has in fact signed a memorandum of understanding with Africa Geothermal International Ltd (AGIL), a subsidiary of AGIL No.1 engaged in the development of geothermal energy in Kenya, in particular on the Longonot field which offers potential for development of 500 MW, of which 140 MW are ready to be exploited.
The agreement was signed during Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s visit to Kenya. The Chairman and CEO of PGE, Julfi Hadi declared on this occasion: “We are confident that Pertamina Geothermal Energy’s strategic efforts in Africa can support the company’s goals of increasing installed capacity and expanding its clean energy portfolio internationally to achieve the aspirations of a global clean energy company. »
With 865 MW of installed geothermal capacity, Kenya, which is in the world’s top 8 geothermal producers, is the undisputed leader in Africa in this area. The country is relying more and more on this energy to make its energy mix cleaner and accelerate the electrification of its territory.
