The Carinthian energy supplier Kelag announced price adjustments for household electricity for existing and new customers on Friday. The past year and a half has remained constant for the majority of the approximately 180,000 existing customers and is currently 10.87 cents net per kilowatt hour. From August 1, the price will increase to 20.70 cents. Customers are also offered a preferential tariff with a twelve-month commitment and a net price of 16.50 cents.

The tariff offered to new customers will be reduced to this level in mid-June. It is currently 27 cents net. A separate tariff is offered for households that heat with a heat pump, for example, and thus consume more than 3,500 kilowatt hours. It is variable at 18.70 cents net or 14.50 cents in the special version with binding. Customers who are currently paying a higher price can switch to the new customer tariff via the Kelag customer portal.

Kelag sales manager Alexander Jordan emphasized in the APA interview that Kelag will remain one of the cheapest providers in Austria. For a long time it was possible to keep the electricity price low due to the long-term procurement strategy, but now the adjustment has to be made. Even if prices have recently fallen once more, procurement costs are currently three times higher than the pre-crisis level. At the end of June, customers will receive information regarding the price adjustments by post. An objection to the price adjustment is tantamount to termination, following three months at the latest these customers need a new electricity provider. Jordan expects most existing customers to opt for the discount plan.

At the end of last year, Kelag opened the basic service tariff for new customers and thus gained customers “in the low five-digit range”, Jordan said when asked. They were therefore able to enjoy the low price that the majority of existing customers pay. The tariff for these customers will then be raised to match the price adjustment that has now been announced – depending on which model the majority of customers choose. The evaluation is planned for the third quarter. A test case regarding the general access of new customers to this basic service – the claim is disputed – is still running, explained Jordan.
