Labour leader Keir Starmer was tasked on Friday by King Charles III with forming a government as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after holding an audience with the sovereign at Buckingham Palace, the royal residence in London.
On Friday, the new British Prime Minister said that the United Kingdom had voted “decisively for change” and to “return politics to public service” after winning the general elections in this country.
The Labour leader made his first address to the nation from Downing Street – the seat of government – as the new head of the Executive after winning the general election by an overwhelming absolute majority.
“My government will serve you, politics can be a force for good,” said an exultant Starmer, who also had words of respect for the management of his predecessor in office, the conservative Rishi Sunak.
The new head of the Executive thanked the outgoing Prime Minister, whose party suffered its worst result in history today, obtaining 121 seats (out of a total of 650).
Regarding Sunak, Starmer highlighted “his achievement as the first British-Asian head of government in this country” and the “extra effort that this will have required and which should not be underestimated by anyone.”
“We also recognise the dedication and hard work that you have brought to your leadership,” he noted, going on to stress that, however, this country “has now voted decisively for change, for national renewal and for the return of politics to public service.”
The Labour leader also said that “when the gap between the sacrifices made by citizens and the service they receive from politicians becomes so great, it leads to weariness in the heart of a nation, to the loss of hope, of spirit, of belief in a better future.”
“But we must move forward together. Now this wound, this lack of trust, can only be healed with actions and not words, I know that,” he said.
Starmer said they could “start today with the simple recognition that public service is a privilege and that your Government should treat every person in this country with respect.”
“The work of change begins immediately, but rest assured, we will rebuild the United Kingdom,” the country’s new leader concluded.
